“Ornek – Crimean Tatar ornament and knowledge about it” was inscribed on the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.
The Ministry of Culture supported the initiative of the non-governmental organization “Alem” in cooperation with the masters from Crimea and the creative association “Chatyr-Dag” to make the Crimean Tatar traditional ornament, which is the treasury of the spiritual wealth of cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Ukraine and the Crimea, closer to Europe and start work on its inscription on UNESCO intangible heritage list.
Yevhen Nyschuk, the Minister of Culture of Ukraine, stated it during a press conference in National News Agency of Ukraine UKRINFORM.

Yevhen Nyschuk, the Minister of Culture of Ukraine, stated it during a press conference in National News Agency of Ukraine UKRINFORM.
First Deputy Minister of Information Policy Emine Dzhaparova and Advisor to the Minister of Culture of Ukraine, head of the non-governmental organization “ALEM” Esma Adzhieva attended the event.
According to the Minister of Culture, the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine contains significant elements for the history and cultural heritage of the country, which are subsequently prepared to be inscribed on UNESCO intangible heritage list. At the moment, two Ukrainian elements are inscribed on UNESCO intangible heritage list: Petrykivka decorative painting as a phenomenon of the Ukrainian ornamental folk art (ХІХ – ХХІ century) and Cossack songs of Dnipropetrovsk region, as well as in February 2018 nomination form of the element “The painted Kosiv Ceramics” for the inscription on UNESCO List was passed to UNESCO by the Ministry of Culture.
“Today’s event is a symbolic and a positive thing, the inscription of the Crimean Tatar ornament Ornek on the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine starts the work on nomination form preparation to submit this item on UNESCO intangible heritage list in a year. Undoubtedly, this is the satisfaction of one of the identification elements of the whole people, of its history, of its traditions, of its culture, which was passed on from generation to generation, even in difficult times. Crimean Tatar ornament Ornek which belongs to the most ancient achievements of the Crimean Tatar people culture, fully meets all the criteria and requirements for this distinction. This is unique phenomenon of world culture, related its theme, symbolism with the ancient history of Crimea, with all civilizations that have passed through this land. For centuries, the technique of ornament was not only safeguarded and passed on from generation to generation through utilities, but also was being developed constantly. The ornament has a huge positive energy, has its own codes and symbols, carries a charge of success, well-being and the safeguarding of the generation”, Yevhen Nyschuk says.
The Minister of Culture also assured that the state, on its side, is ready to support the traditions and the cultural heritage, which the Crimean Tatar people carry here on the mainland, especially in this difficult situation of the Crimea annexation.
“At the same time, further inscription of the Ornek element on the list of the intangible heritage of UNESCO means its protection at the international level. And our main motivation is to safeguard this extraordinary wealth by disseminating this knowledge in schools and cultural centers. This will facilitate its reproduction and safeguarding”, – he added.
